You're Great. Here's How I Know...

Dear Friend,

Sometimes I scratch my head at all the change going on in the world, but if there’s one consistent in my life, it’s this- I can see the good in others, even when they can’t see it in themselves. If we’ve met, I hope you’ve experienced that firsthand.

Give me a few minutes alone with you in a cafe, sipping coffee, sitting face to face, sharing an authentic conversation, and your greatness will reveal itself to me. It never fails.

Maybe it’s because I believe, without doubt, that we are all here for some greater good, more than just paying rents and taxes.

Whether there’s a dormant artist within you fighting to paint the next Mona Lisa, write the next To Kill a Mockingbird, or be the best mother or father you can be despite a dysfunctional family upbringing, I know there is greatness within you.

How do I know? Because I have spoken to enough audiences, coached enough people, and treated enough patients to observe this- We all have at least one special gift that can make the world a better place.

Allow me to use my family as an example…

My mother, born to poor parents in a tiny village on the edge of the Greek Mediterranean, forced to leave school at age 7 to pick olives to support her family, believes she has no special gifts. I know because I’ve asked her. She misguidedly believes that despite the fact she raised three children by herself in a foreign country, not speaking the language, working on a sewing machine in a factory, there’s nothing special about her.

I provide her with this evidence to the contrary…

My brother has gone on to become a renowned architect, building beautiful spaces for people to enjoy with the people they love, using his gift of seeing a beautiful space in his mind, then creating it into reality.

My sister has dedicated her physical therapy career, and life, to treating dogs, beloved by their owners, grateful for her compassion and expertise.

I can go on and on with examples like this, having met people that society can easily walk by and dismiss as irrelevant, missing their kindness, skill, talent, compassion, empathy, in short, their secret, burning desire to change the world, the only thing lacking is their belief in themselves to do so.

I also believe, sometimes it just takes one person to believe in you, to help you see the good that has always been inside of you.

Over 30 years ago I quit my football scholarship and failed out of college. One anatomy and physiology professor at a community college said to me, after I failed his first test, “Peter, you’re better than that.” That’s all it took for me to graduate with honors.

So today, I want to remind you, in case you don’t know, you’re great.

If you’re interested, here’s how I help myself, the people that I love, and the people that I serve to find the greatness that is within them.

  • Surround yourself with people who see your good.

  • Separate with love from those who don’t.

  • Find a good therapist, coach, mentor, friend, who will help you dig deeper and uncover your best self, the self that has always been there.

  • Every day direct your mind toward nurturing that best self, replacing negative thoughts about yourself with the truth- you matter.

Please don’t let anything or anyone stop you from doing what you know in your heart and gut you’re destined to do. Give yourself that gift, today, right now.

And please, if you do nothing else today, remember, you’re great. Just ask me, and I’ll tell you why :-)

All My Best,

Peter ❤️
