Big thank you to their forward thinking Athletic Director, Dino Eliopoulos- I’m grateful for the opportunity to share lessons that changed my life.
I say that because as a kid, I lacked self-confidence. It’s a long story why- you can read my memoir when it comes out :-) So I’m grateful for the chance to give back, sharing my journey of earning a football scholarship, then walking away from it, and the lessons that saved my life afterwards.
Before the presentation, I reflected, “What could someone have said to me to help me as a lost 16-year-old?”
I shared with them 30 years of searching for inspiration, meaning, purpose, and great health. Specifically, how to be a leader on and off the field, how to eat for success, and how to train your body for power and confidence.
I showed them my press clippings (below) to demonstrate, just because someone looks like they’re having an amazing life, doesn’t mean they’re not struggling inside. I reminded them that great leaders have empathy and support others by being the best leader they can be.

How do you motivate students, athletes, anyone?
Ask them, “What do you want more than anything?”
Asking this question helps people tap into what already motivates them. Then, whether it’s a student or employee, you can help them tie in their vision to the school’s/company’s vision, making it a win win!
Next, give them the tools to acquire it.
In 30 years, these 3 tools have never failed me:
Vision- Create a compelling vision and let no one and nothing distract you from it.
What must come true for me
Nutrition- Eat whole foods 80% of the time (You don’t have to be perfect) for great energy, focus, and health.
Exercise- Train your body in a circuit, building muscle and confidence, focusing on your success.
Doing these three things consistently, everyday, every time negative thoughts creep in, will guarantee you stay focused and get what you want.
