Mary Lost 13lbs By Focusing On This One Thing

Of course I love receiving messages like this from my life coaching clients. I mean who doesn’t want to lose weight these days. But when I read in between the lines of Mary’s response, aside from her hating me less, a refrain I hear more often than you might think in my line of work :-), I observe a woman who is becoming empowered.

How?

She’s taking control of her health. If you pause to think about it, what we eat, the exercise we do, and the thoughts we direct our minds to have, are the only things we can control, the rest of the world being uncontrollable, especially in these challenging times.

Focusing on food, which is what Mary did, is one of the most powerful ways you and I can become empowered. That’s why I start most of my life coaching clients with how to eat, something most of us were never taught how to do properly. So don’t blame yourself if you’re struggling.

Let me explain.

When I first started my journey 30 years ago, 65 pounds overweight, miserable, depressed, lost, I focused first on losing weight because, as I was getting my nutrition degree I learned a powerful secret- If I burned more calories than I consumed, then I would be guaranteed to lose weight at the end of the week. The easiest way to do that was to eat less calories.

And that’s exactly what happened to Mary. Listen to how she responded when I asked her what helped her most.

“I just tried to focus really hard on making the 1200 calories work. I would track my food throughout the day to the best of my ability & try to adjust as I was going day to day. My workouts- I tried to be as consistent as I could. I honestly hadn’t even noticed I lost weight until I put that red dress on lol. I was like WOAHHH lol”

Do you see what Mary did?

Actually Mary did 2 life changing things;

  1. She tracked everything she ate and drank (My clients who do this always lose weight, guaranteed).

  2. She stopped focusing on weight and instead directed her powerful mind toward a task- eating 1200 calories or less per day. When you think about it, that’s what we do when we meditate, focusing our mind on a mantra or desired result. When you and I direct our minds, we are unstoppable.

Tracking everything she ate and and recording her progress, I’m referring to the graph below, gave her objective, visual proof of her success which her brain processed, empowering her even more.

Whether she knew it or not, Mary was tapping into her power, as my therapist refers to it. She was directing her mind toward the task at hand, eating a certain mount of calories per day, and not focusing on the results. When she lost weight, that came with even more benefits- thinking more clearly, having more energy & less anxiety, sleeping better, looking and feeling sexier in her red dress, and so on. All of those things together keep us focused and motivated. And that’s when we do our best work.

Now, if Mary wanted to take this even further, and keep the weight off for the rest of her life, I would coach her to do this…

While she’s feeling more confident about herself, happier with what she sees in the mirror, feeling more comfortable in her clothes, sleeping better at night, improving her relationships, controlling her anxiety, thinking more clearly, all benefits of eating healthier (when you and I eat better our gut produces serotonin, the bodies natural feel good chemical), she can connect to her best self, making her unstoppable.

Because she is empowered, and her mind is more focused on what she wants, she can tap into a higher power, or God, or nature, or spirituality, or whatever she believes in, ultimately helping her connect to her purpose.

That’s how powerful eating healthier can be, and what the healthiest, happiest people in the world do. It’s the missing link of happiness and fulfillment for so many of us, including for me 30 years ago.

Observation- I know you know this- losing weight is not the ultimate goal. A better life is. But starting with something you and I can control, food, is a great way to jump start that great life we crave.
