Healthier Oatmeal

Hi Friend,

Are you, like most of my clients and friends, trying to be healthier, but struggling? I hear you. What I have observed over many years being a nutritionist and health coach is people eating “psuedo” healthy foods, like flavored oatmeal, which sabotage their efforts. For example, plain oatmeal has one ingredient and 1 gram of sugar. Flavored oatmeal can have 10 ingredients or more, and 5 to 10 grams of added sugar. What the ….!!!

Tip- Avoid foods with the ingredient “natural flavor”. The FDA says natural flavor can be any of the following- “The term natural flavor or natural flavoring means the essential oil, oleoresin, essence or extractive, protein hydrolysate, distillate, or any product of roasting, heating or enzymolysis, which contains the flavoring constituents derived from a spice, fruit or fruit juice, vegetable or vegetable juice, edible yeast, herb, bark, bud, root, leaf or similar plant material, meat, seafood, poultry, eggs, dairy products, or fermentation products thereof, whose significant function in food is flavoring rather than nutritional.”

My oatmeal guidelines:

  • Choose unflavored, organic oatmeal (it should have 1 ingredient, whole oats)

  • Avoid “natural flavors”

  • Add your own sweetener, flavor enhancer, like; organic berries, or any fruit you like, small amounts of maple syrup, local honey, or cinnamon (an anti-inflammatory)

I created virtual health programs to help people who have tried to lose weight and be healthier, but struggled on their own. I was one of them when I was 65 pounds overweight. Some of the strategies employees learn from my programs that can change their lives are simple; like how to choose healthier lunches and night time snacks, and how to exercise for a few minutes a day to tone up and look good. They also learn powerful psychological strategies; like mindful eating, emotional triggers, and stress reduction; some of the reasons 95% of diets and exercises fail.
